WSCT client Dwayne White, along with co-defendants Eric Lloyd and Damon Anderson, were tried by jury over the course of two weeks in 2019 for their alleged involvement in a large-scale illegal drug racket. White was convicted of most charges and received a functional life sentence – more than 50 years of imprisonment.
The prosecution’s case at trial involved wiretaps, contraband seizures, and the testimony of multiple cooperating witnesses who were allegedly implicated in the racket, including William Wisher.
At trial, Wisher denied that the State promised him anything in exchange for his cooperation.
WSCT proved that was false, after their aggressive postconviction litigation revealed a hidden audio recording. On that recording, the lead prosecutor told Wisher before trial that the State promised to ask for Wisher’s own sentence to be reduced by years in exchange for his cooperation.
WSCT then deployed that hidden evidence of the State’s deceit to aggressively and quickly litigate the State into a corner, persuading them to settle White’s case and those of co-defendants Lloyd and Anderson as well. As a result, White’s sentence was reduced by nearly 40 years.
